As promised, here is Honeymoon Part 2: Safari in Kenya’s Masai Mara. There are few travel experiences I have had in my life as incredible!
I am a wildlife lover so being immersed in some of the world’s most beautiful and rare wildlife is as magical as it gets! I had been on safari once before in South Africa, but must admit that Kenya was even more incredible. We saw herds of elephants, a pack of lions eating a buffalo, a pack of 5 cheetahs, leopards, hippos, hyenas and more! And the best part was that it was baby season, so we definitely got our fix of cuteness.
When it came to choosing accommodations for safari, we were determined to stay in lux tents in the middle of Mara, but only if the money we spent supported the local community. Fortunately, I discovered Sala’s Camp, a social impact lodge dedicated to conservation of the black rhino which is endangered. On top of that, the camp also happened to be energy efficient functioning entirely off of solar energy (my fave of course!). It was all my dreams packed in one place. Sala’s only has 7 tents perfectly situated on the river with stunning views and pools that come with each tent.
We had the pleasure of having Moses, an authentic Masai tribe member, as our safari guide and driver and he did not hesitate to get up close and personal with the wildlife that he knows so well. We woke up every morning at 5am to begin our game drives and even enjoyed breakfast on the reserve by cooking off of the side of our safari truck. One morning, we decided to start the day with a hot air balloon safari, which was incredibly surreal. Upon finishing our balloon ride, we enjoyed a champagne brunch in the middle of the Mara surrounded by zebras! Overall, our trip to the Masai Mara was one of the best excursions I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing!
