Recently I have had a few readers ask what my typical work day is like so I decided it I would share a day in the life post so you can get a glimpse into my average day. It can be a bit hectic running from my office (Soho House) to meetings with press, potential buyers or UNICEF, but each day is unique and exciting.
As you may know, I started my career at Goldman Sachs working countless hours and never leaving the office. Needless to say, I am grateful that I get to create my own schedule, but I certainly wouldn’t say I work less hours! Being an entrepreneur is challenging, but it is definitely worth all of the hard work. Follow the photos below to see my average day.
I get up every morning at 7am and start my day with a coffee from High Line Hotel which is near my apartment. Most Tuesday’s and Thursday’s are meeting days, so if it is one of those days, after grabbing coffee, I take a cab to my first meeting. In this case, my first meeting of the day was at One World Trade Center at Conde Nast. Conde Nast is the mass media company that owns publications such as Vogue, Vanity Fair and Arch Digest. I spend a couple of days each month meeting with media to share new things I am working on. Most recently we did a round of meetings specifically around the launch of our new Holiday candle – if you haven’t already, you need to order one! Unfortunately, Conde Nast doesn’t allow photos inside, so we just took a few outside ahead of my meetings.
After three meetings at Conde Nast, I headed to a lunch meeting at my new favorite spot ABCv. This meeting was with a potential buyer who was interested in a Starling Project collaboration for their retail store.
After a stellar meal, I headed out to Brooklyn to the warehouse where we manufacture our candles to check in on our latest batch and work on the next scent we will add to our collection. We mix many scents and do quite a bit of market testing to ensure that each scent we release in our line is liked by most people. This requires a lot of our time, but we are dedicated to creating unique, stellar scents.
I end every work day at Soho House with my team catching up on various tasks we are each working on. I personally love using a shared space as our office since it gives us opportunities to network with others and also allows us to get unbiased feedback.
After work you can typically find me at Equinox, Shadowbox or Barry’s for my end of the day sweat session. I personally find it enjoyable working out at the end of the day to end each day on a high note.
Every day is different so this is just one example of a day in my life. I can also often be found in UNICEF’s office downtown, speaking at events or in various showrooms when I am working on a design project. Currently I am working on redoing my own apartment, so I have recently had many meetings with contractors, subcontractors and various showrooms. It can be a bit hectic, but I truly love everything that I do!
