As you may have already noticed on my Instastories, I am busy redoing the new apartment Carey and I just moved into in NYC. Consequently, it has led to a few people asking what to do to spruce up their home if they aren’t able to do a remodel. Good news is I have a few easy suggestions to give your space a makeover without much effort.
Firstly, I would say the easiest way to give your space a pop and make it more personal is simply painting the walls. While I am not a huge fan of bright colors, I do think even the faintest grays can add dimension to a room. In my case, in my old apartment I got sick of the stark white walls in my bedroom and ultimately decided on going a bit masculine by painting the walls charcoal (see image above). I loved the result and it entirely transformed the room.
Additionally, I would suggest adding unique lamps to your space whether that be in the bedroom or the living room. There is a whole world of crazy lamps out there and some can add character to a room like the bird lamps pictured. Out of everything in my apartment, these lamps create more conversation than anything else.
My next suggestion would be adding warmth with candles (and no I am not just saying this because I own a candle company!) Many of us New Yorkers don’t have the luxury of a fireplace, so I think candles are the next best thing. The combination of fragrance and fire creates a calming and inviting environment. I think many people underestimate the power of aromatherapy and how it can entirely shift the vibe of an interior from cold to warm.
I would also highly recommend adding greenery to your home to liven it up. Succulents are a great way to go because they barely ever need to be watered and they are stunning. Everyone needs a little green in their home.
Finally, I believe in loading up on coffee table books. Since I tend to go monochromatic with my designs, I love coffee table books and art to bring pops of color into each space. Coffee table books are a great way to bring your personal interests into your home. And who doesn’t love thumbing through a good coffee table book?
Finally finally, I say go for it with nontraditional items that make it a bit more interesting such as the hand coat hooks pictured below. I could have easily put a simple hook near my front door for my purse and coat, but that would’ve been boring. Many of my guests think the hands are art!
