Things are finally back in full swing following the wedding! Last week I hit the ground running by hand-pouring Starling candles in Brooklyn with my team. There is something incredibly relaxing and enjoyable about pouring candles in a studio filled with the finest fragrance. I do many things, but The Starling Project is my pride and joy because I am crazy about home fragrance and I am passionate about supporting the solar energy cause, so the combo of the two is really a dream come true. (For those of you who may not know, for the sale of each Starling candle, we help provide solar energy to rural communities in need through UNICEF).
As the founder of The Starling Project, it was incredibly important to me that I create products that are superior to others on the market. When I did my research, I found that most candles have chemicals in either the fragrance or the wax and that most are not sustainably made. I was determined to make healthy-to-burn all-natural, soy wax candles that are hand-poured and that have a long burn time. We even took it a step further and decided to use recycled glass for the candles and recycled packaging to stay in line with the clean energy focus at the core of our brand. There are no other candle brands doing what we are doing and we are incredibly proud of that.
Quite a few people have asked that I share what it is like behind the scenes at The Starling Project, so I want to share the 7 step Starling Project process with you, so here it goes. Be sure to reference the photos below to follow.
7 Step Starling Project Process:
Step 1: We play chemist. We carefully select divine smelling essential oils and combine them with each other to create entirely unique fragrances. We do this with a perfumer which is a person who studies fragrances in order to mix the best combination. Coolest job ever – I know!
Step 2: We do market research. We spend quite a bit of time determining which scents are liked by most people by obtaining direct feedback from a vast audience. Then we decide which of the most popular scents we will add to our collection.
Step 3: We order our hand-made recycled glass. Once the glass is ready to go, we have it stamped with our brand name.
Step 4: We hand-pour in Brooklyn. The glass is kept in a warmer and then brought out as soon as the wax is ready to be poured. We use a small device to help us accurately pour the wax.
Step 5: We add in the cotton wicks. As soon as the wax begins to harden, we delicately place in the wicks.
Step 6: We cut the wicks. After the wax has completely hardened, we hand-trim the wicks.
Step 7: We place each candle in a Starling box. The process is complete. The candles are ready to be shipped to our customers to enjoy! Visit starlingproject.org to purchase.
